Otaru City Museum of Art: First Exhibition of “Holy Otaru”

The Otaru City Museum of Art is currently hosting Special Exhibition III: “Depicting the Coal, Iron, and Port through Paintings – A Trio Exhibition by Koetsu Ito, Shinichi Wajima, and Masayoshi Hayama” from October 19th to December 28th, 2024.

Within this exhibition, a section is dedicated to the works of PHOTPOET ©HIHAREAL×Tinpoet, a communication art unit produced by Favorite Corporation. Their piece, “Holy Otaru,” is being unveiled for the first time during the exhibition period. This work combines photography and poetry to depict the myriad aspects of the land, life, history, and daily lives of the people.

Tinpoet, born in Tomioka, Otaru, spent his early years in coal mining communities in Bibai and Mikasa. His grandfather served as the track maintenance chief at Otaru Station during wartime, safeguarding the railways. After his parents’ divorce, Tinpoet was raised in his grandparents’ home in Tomioka, alongside his mother and her sisters. For him, port towns connected by northern coal mines and railways hold special significance. Expressing his feelings for Otaru as part of this exhibition themed around “Coal, Iron, and Port” is a remarkable coincidence.

HIHAREAL honed his skills as an assistant to renowned Japanese photographer Yoshihiro Tatsuki before establishing himself independently. He continues to capture reality-infused snapshots reminiscent of Daido Moriyama, marking him as a master of the new generation.

Together, Tinpoet and HIHAREAL immersed themselves in the streets of Otaru, engaging with its people, experiencing the northern nature and wildlife, and wandering through time and space as if enjoying time travel. Their unique sensibilities culminated in “Holy Otaru.” Set to the soundtrack of Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Unaccompanied Cello Suites,” this collaboration of poetry in Japanese, English, and Traditional Chinese, alongside beautiful and powerful photographs, invites viewers into a northern, exotic realm.

Residents of Otaru and visitors alike are encouraged to visit the exhibition.
